>SARO General Interest Meeting

When: Every Wednesday at 7pm
Where: The next SARO meeting will be DOWNSTAIRS in Schine Student center in Ludwig lounge. The space is smaller, quiet and has computers available so we can look things up and watch educational films together during meetings. We will test this space out for a meeting and will decide if this is preferable to Panasci. We will be watching a short documentary about the foie gras industry in order to discuss the future of doing outreach in our attempts to get L’Adour to remove foie gras from the menu.

SARO Vegan Bakesale
We have met our fundraising goals for our members who will be attending the National Conference to End Factory Farming. Thanks to everyone who helped by baking, selling or buying! Now we are focusing on saving up some funds for some future events and to just have a safety net for the 8 animals we are currently sponsoring through our foster network. Help by baking and delivering your baked goods the morning of the bakesale, or volunteering to sit at the table and sell the baked goods. Anti-KFC cruelty protest (Non- SARO event)
What: Hold signs(including a huge full color banner) and distribute literature to passerby about the cruelty practices the fast food giant KFC condones. This will be a peaceful protest on the sidewalk outside of a KFC restaurant. KFC is responsible for the miserable lives and horrific slaughter of over 1 billion chickens every year. KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can’t even walk, and often break their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious.Visit www.kfccruelty.com for more information.
Where: KFC located at 825 Butternut St. Syracuse, NY 13208

Rescued lab rats need homes
Syracuse Animal Rights Organization is currently fostering 5 former classroom lab rats rescued from a private University in NJ. These rats would have been gassed or beheaded in order to ‘get rid of them’ after their usefulness was done for the semester. As more and more Universities have been allowing rescue groups to take in ‘used’ animals after classes end, it is becoming harder and harder to find homes for them. Now they have made a journey through multiple foster homes and volunteer transporters up to Syracuse where they can find a good loving home and forget their stressful upbringing. to see these rats, check out their adoption profile here: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/20879464
These rats are all males who are approximately 10 month old with white fur and red eyes. They do not have any injuries from their time in the lab- it was psychological testing that was done on them. Though a bit shy in a new home, they are used to human contact. There is a $3 adoption fee per rat to help cover transportation costs and supplies used for the rescue of these rats. A phone interview is required to determine potential adopters have adequate housing and a plan for the last 2-3 years of their lives. It is preferred to adopt rats in pairs(unless you already have another rat) so they will have the company of their own species, especially when you are away at work etc. Contact Amber at toneuteriscuter at msn.com if you are interested in adopting.

SARO cat foster program
SARO is attempting to assist the low cost spay and neuter clinic Spay and Neuter Syracuse (SANS) with the recently abandoned cats who were just left carriers in the parking lot. There are different colors, sexes, and temperments, and they would all love to be in a foster home instead of living in a medical space that is not prepared to house cats. If you live off campus(dorms do not allow animals) and would like to foster a cat or two for the semester, email Amber atvolunteer@spayandneutersyracuse.org Supplies such as litter boxes, food and litter can be provided if needed.
